What is Periodontology?
Of all dental specialists,
periodontists are dentists that specialize in gum treatment. Periodontology is
the study of the gums - this includes gum care, gum-related diseases and oral
inflammation. For what seems to be a seemingly small body part that makes up
our human form, the impact of poor gum hygiene to your health can be
significantly great.
There are two main gum diseases, which are Periodontitis
(loss of gum attachment to the root surface) and Gingivitis (inflammation and
bleeding of gums). In most cases, only the more problematic and severe cases
would be treated by Periodontists. However, the overall health and maintenance
of your gums is highly important to prevent the development of gum diseases and
is important to seek advice at a Singapore dental surgery if ever you feel
discomfort.
Gingivitis is the mildest form of
gum disease and if not treated properly, it can lead to Periodontitis which is
more serious. The effects of Gingivitis are red and irritated gums, which is
quite common that many people have at different strengths.
The primary cause is
poor oral hygiene which allows plague to build up on teeth. Plaque is a type of
bacteria that forms from leftover sugars or starch that gets deposited and left
to harden at the base of your teeth, which over infects your gums to cause
inflammation. This is what Periodontitis classifies as Gingivitis and why you
are advised of the importance of flossing and brushing your teeth regularly.
Most common treatments will be such as deep cleaning, scaling and root
planting. If the initial symptoms are not treated, it gets a lot more
complicated and the disease can develop into the tissues and bones of your gum
which is termed Periodontitis. It is a very severe case for symptoms to develop
to stages but it happens and can be treated through root surface debridement
which removes the damaged tissues. read more periodontics.com
